Starting Your Yoga Journey This 2019

With 2019 coming to an end and our calendars slowly filling up with various festive events, it can be easy to put our own selfcare at the bottom of the to do list. I often hear people who have been wanting to start yoga say: ‘that’s something for the new year’. Whilst January is a great time to start something new, there really is no time like the present and starting or maintaining a regular yoga practice at this time of year is so beneficial. So, I’m here to let you know how you can use yoga as a tool to have a calm Christmas and start the next decade in the best possible way.

We all need time to ourselves, and this time of year is no exception. With a hectic social calendar full of family events, and financial pressures associated with them, it’s easy to feel a little lost. Stress is the last thing that we need during the festive season, so taking time to feel grounded, reconnect with yourself, and nurture your body and mind is so important. Yoga is a great tool to achieve this.

Thinking about what your non-negotiables are at this time of year can be really helpful in learning when to say no and preventing overwhelm. How do you feel after you take a yoga class? How does it impact the rest of your day/week? Is this feeling something that you’re willing to sacrifice? I’m guessing not! Block out at least 1 hour a week in your calendar to attend a yoga class. Make this hour non-negotiable. If a friend or family member asks to do something during this time, say no or suggest an alternative. There is absolutely no shame in prioritising your selfcare. When life gets crazy it’s easy to neglect our practice, but it’s actually when we need it most. This is something I’ve learned myself over the years and now make a conscious effort to fit yoga into my schedule, even when things get full on. The reality is that we all have the same number of hours in the day and we’re never ‘too busy’, it just comes down to what we prioritise.

Feeling connected to yourself helps you to feel calmer and more grounded. Ending 2019 in this way sets you up to have a really positive start to the next decade. It’s common for us to wake up on 1st January and make resolutions that benefit our health, but why not start to put the groundwork in this December so that you already have a strong foundation for the start of 2020? If you prioritise yoga this month, you’ll already start to gain the tools that help you to feel calmer and more centred, allowing you to enter the next decade feeling positive and ready to achieve your goals.

There really is nothing to lose, so if you’ve been thinking about starting yoga, don’t wait until the new year! Get in touch now to book onto a class and make time for selfcare this December.
